we go to ramin mellegard at the tokyo stock exchange. good morning. looks like all eyes are on the u.s. election. >> yes, indeed. and really investors looking at the presidential race which is coming down to the wire. looks tight so far. investors really don't want to be making any big bets just ahead of that. let's have a look at the opening levels here in tokyo. both indexes down slightly lower. and we're below the 9,000 level for the nikkei. topix also down .4%. nikkei did lose ground. it was down half a percent. but did trade below that temporarily and we're below that again today. now, the main focus in japan is also how the yen and slowing growth in china is affecting japanese corporate earnings here which has been coming out thick and fast. however, we were watching toyota yesterday which came out with earnings after the bell and it was a bit of a standout really outperforming saying estimates profits for the business year ending next march 2013 will total $13 billion. that's up 5% in yen terms from its previous projection. the company is also

and to see how stocks in japan are doing, we go to ramin mellegard at the tokyo stock exchange. how are things kicking off over there? >> good morning to you. yes, indeed. still a bit of hesitation in the markets there with the u.s. fiscal cliff and also the concerns whether greece will get another bailout from the eurozone community as well. some is weighing on the markets here. finance in the eurozone wrapped up one of their meetings. there's another one planned for next week. we'll keep an eye on that. let's have a look at the opening levels today. and both indexes trading in the positive there. key psychological level which we closed below yesterday. looking a bit positive in the first minutes of trading. nikkei closed below 8,700 yesterday. but looking at asian indexes yesterday and i'll keep track of them today, we might get a bit of boost there. especially the shanghai composite which were trading higher. china data over the weekend which actually showed exports growing 11.6% was a boost there suggesting a turnaround there for the second biggest economy of the world. i'll

we go to ramin mellegard at the tokyo stock exchange. quite a solid move across the board in the u.s. >> definitely seeing a follow through yuko. let's go straight to the opening levels so you can see what i'm talking about for the nikkei and the topix for this -- for today november 20th. 9,171. closing at a high. it's been up almost 6%. we'll see how the trade today. 2 billion shares were traded today. that compares to 1.3 billion last wednesday before the markets moved substantially higher. a lot of focus of course on the weeker yen. because of the premise that the possible new government led by ldp leader abe will be more aggressive in its stand against deflation as well as further monetary easing measures. and that's really brought in an influx of foreign buyers as well going for large cap stocks. some of the blue chip exporters that we've seen gain. but also looking at some of the undervalued banking and financial shares as well which have gained as the stock markets gain as well. as their portfolios gain in value. let's have a look
